The Best Hacks to Host a Garage Sale

Best hacks to host a garage sale

In order to fund our garage organizing escapade, we had a garage sale to raise money and declutter our house and garage. It went really well and I’d like to give some tips to anyone who wants to have their own garage sale. Here are the best hacks to host a garage sale.

The first thing is to check if your community has a garage sale event going on. Where we live, there’s a yearly community garage sale where dozens of people sign up, there are maps printed out, and over a hundred people drive around looking at all the garage sales. Having something so organized with that many potential “customers” can really boost your success. Maybe if your community doesn’t have anything like that you can ask your city council.

But as for the garage sale itself, here are some helpful tips.

1: Planning

When will you run the garage sale? How many signs will you get and where will you put them so the most people will see them? Call your family and friends who are near you to stop on by and tell their friends who are around as well. There won’t be any sale if nobody knows it’s happening!

2:Get Organized

Go through your house and decide what you want to get rid of. This is a great time to declutter. Group similar things together, like books, toys, clothes etc. Make sure it looks nice and clean and pleasing to the eyes.

3: Good Atmosphere

Set up some tables to display your stuff, keep a little bit of music playing, make it a good vibe. Put the good stuff up front to catch people’s attention. Be friendly and strike up conversations, people love connecting. And make sure you have cash to give people change. If it’s not a welcoming environment, people are going to want to leave fairly quickly.

4: Bargaining

People will be trying to get everything for damn near free, so be warned! You will have to bargain, and if you’re really not a confrontational type, maybe ask someone to help you. Something you want to sell for $20 because it’s actually worth $50, people will offer you $5 and get upset when you don’t agree. That’s the ugly part of this, and for some the most difficult. You have to be willing to just say “no” to some people. However maybe you can convince them by bundling the deal with some other stuff for a discount.

5: Stay Safe

If you can, have someone there with you to help watch the stuff and just in case someone gets rambunctious. Keep your money in a secure spot and keep your phone on you. These best hacks to host a garage sale don’t matter compared to your safety.

6: What now?

Your garage sale ended and it was a huge success! But you still have quite a bit of stuff left over. Donate it to a good cause or throw it away. You decided it was something you don’t need anymore and that’s why you were willing to sell it, so don’t hoard it now.
