Kitchen Mood Board

I turned 30 last year and I was telling my husband that now that I’m older my tastes in everything have changed. I’ve never imagined being so passionate about creating a home and dreaming about designing my kitchen, I mean beyond decorating which would be fine too. But given the opportunity that I can make this house our home, I’m making every decision with  a lot of thought but excitement too. Let’s ditch boring spaces. I think in the last few years the spaces with character and personality are the way to go and I’m here for it. Saying that I never have wanted a white kitchen.

I want a moody kitchen full of charm and character. I have my eyes on a Spanish or French kitchen with creamy and rich colors with everything new but having an old feel with stone or brick as statement tile! Also have moody lighting. One good example is Emma Roberts’ kitchen in AD, when I saw this space my heart stopped.

If we are really honest, having and building a home is expensive and it takes so much time. We have lived almost 3 years in this house and we are just being able to do some aesthetic upgrades. When we got the house there were some unexpected situations like fixing and leveling the foundation of the house, one super expensive leak in one of the bathrooms, and a pipe that burst near the garage outside of the house. I mean I wish we could be like some couples that actually fix their house before moving or have the budget to renovate everything as soon as they move, but that was not the case for us, and that’s okay.

It’s all in the details

The kitchen we have has great bones and also has passed for a first round reno of the countertops and the backsplash tile. But the floors and the cabinets are original to the house. They are in good shape so I’m painting the cabinets and updating the hardware. I’m also changing the original floors for a statement checkered tile. For now, my budget only allows peel-and-stick tiles, I can paint the original tile too. But the first option would look better and it would take less time. I want to paint the lower cabinets a moody color (green or black) and the upper cabinets a creamy beige. I want all the walls to be bright and white, and lately, I’ve been thinking about putting some open shelving in certain spots. After we updated the pantry we realized the pantry doors needed to be replaced as same as the door that leads to the garage.

I want to paint the window trim black to make them pop and have a ceiling treatment with beadboard to give it that country house-ranch kind of feel. The truth is that I’m probably not going to be able to achieve all this this year because we already have so much on our plates. But I think manifesting it helps my mind to stay focused and organized about the next steps. So I’m probably going to do it in two parts or wait until the end of the year when I have enough money and time to make this moodboard come true.

Finishing Touches

The tiles I want to get are the ones I already use on my bathroom renovation. They worked so well they have not broken or anything like that, so far it was a great budget decision. It looks more professional than painting it. They are strong and sturdy and they wouldn’t take forever like painting the tiles. So it’s either these or new tiles that would be more expensive though. I want the floor to be the statement piece and make the kitchen have a european vibe.

When it comes to the hardware I’m thinking of mixing vintage pulls, knobs, and cup pulls. To finalize, I want to get some pieces like this rug to pop with those traditional tiles and ad some accent decoration. I also want some open shelves to make the kitchen look more modern and make it look more high-end. These black modern stools complete the room and complement the more traditional pieces.
