Things to Do in New Mexico
My family loves nature! Except for the bug bites and sweating. But that’s why my husband and I chose the end of November to go to Cloudcroft and camp with his brother, Daniel. Here are some things to do in New Mexico.
Cloudcroft
Cloudcroft is a village in New Mexico with a really high elevation with some great camping spots and views. However, it was about a 10 hour drive of a whole lotta nothing for the most part. Texas is great, but West Texas is a barren wasteland for the most part. In some areas you can drive for an hour between gas stations. Watch your gas levels. Once we got there we found out we were ill-prepared for it.
When we set off on our drive it was about 70°. We knew Cloudcroft would be colder, but not to the extent it was. Cloudcroft was covered in snow at mid-day. And at night it got down to a little below 20°. It was a terrible night. We were in our tent just freezing under a bunch of blankets we brought. Meanwhile Boss (we brought our dog) was so cold and grumpy. Sometime around 10-11pm we gave up and slept in our car with the heater running.
White Sands and Elephant Butte
The next morning we packed up and moved out towards our camping spot for the next night. Additionally making a stop at the White Sands National Park which was really cool! Just make sure you don’t have to use the bathroom. The one there is a hole in the ground and doesn’t get much maintenance.
The campsite was near Elephant Butte, and to get there we had to do quite a bit of off-roading. We stayed in a dried out river with big rock walls on three sides of us. My husband made a big fire and we ate a bunch of food. We just ate and drank and talked while Daniel played guitar and sang. Which he did the night before, too. However, it was warmer that night and we were able to stay in the tent and actually get some sleep. Then we packed up, left the way we came, and stopped at a place to get some food and gas before parting ways and driving home.
New Mexico is a beautiful place to camp! It has lots of places where you can be all alone with nature, so if you’re into that I would definitely recommend it. In here I’ll mention some spots worth checking out!
